Biography

Michael Repacholi is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications (DIET), University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He has a BSc in Physics (University of Western Australia), MSc in Radiation Biology (London University, UK) and PhD in Biology (Ottawa University, Canada).

He was a founding member and chaired the International Non-Ionizing Radiation Committee of the International Radiation Protection Association (INIRC/IRPA) and was the first Chairman of the International Commission on-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) established in 1992, and elected Chairman Emeritus in 1996, 

He initiated the International EMF Project at World Health Organization Geneva in 1995 and was Coordinator of WHO’s Radiation and Health Unit until retirement in June 2006. He participated in 12 WHO Task Groups on various non-ionizing radiations topics.

He was awarded honorary doctorates in 2002 from Minsk Medical University for contributions to Belarus on the Chernobyl accident and from San Marco University in 2011for his contribution to Peru on non-ionizing radiation protection issues. 

Health Physics Society awarded him the W.G. Morgan Lectureship for “Outstanding international contributions to the radiation field” June 1993

The Russian Academy of Medical Sciences awarded him the 2004 Speransky Gold Medal for “Great contributions to protection against ionising and non-ionizing radiation”.

The Radiological Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences awarded him the 2004 N.W. Timofeef-Ressovsky Medal for “Valuable contribution to research on the effects of non-ionizing and ionizing radiation on human health and the environment”

He was inducted as an Officer into the Order of Australia in June 2025 for his work on areas such as electromagnetic field health and safety, development of international standards and the health effects of the Chernobyl accident.

He authored or co-authored 230 scientific publications.
