BioEM Society intends to support individual mobility of students or early stage researchers (ESRs) among different research groups worldwide in the High-Income Countries. Grant recipients will learn new techniques and specific procedures, and gain access to data, instruments, and/or methodologies not available in their own laboratories.

The call follows the schedule below:

The STMs are framed within the Grant Period: 20 December 2025 – 19 December 2026.

Candidates Eligibility

Students must have at least the bachelor’s degree.

ESRs should have completed a PhD no more than five years ago and must be no more than 35 years old in the year of application. 

STM duration

The STM should last at least 1 month. Shorter periods down to 2 weeks are allowed but should be justified in the project. Longer periods are also allowed if the STM grant is combined with other funding sources.

Host Suggestions for 2025–2026

For the candidates who are interested, a list of institutions, laboratories, and research groups that have expressed interest in hosting STM recipients, is available. This does not prevent the candidates choosing any other host.

Number of grants

Seven applications will be selected for funding and grant recipients will receive €3,500.

Application Procedure

STM candidates must submit their Application Form and the Supporting Documents to the BioEM Education Committee (education@bioem.org) for evaluation. The Application Form should include the STM project, motivation, and work plan  (download Application Form).

Supporting Documents are:

  • A detailed curriculum vitae of the Candidates which includes the list of scientific publications (download CV template)
  • A letter of acceptance from the Supervisor of the Candidates at their Institution (Home Institution) (download letter template)
  • A letter of acceptance from the Supervisor of the Candidates at the Host Institution (download letter template)
  • A scientific report at the end of the STM period, which includes the description of the main results, planned publications and possible future collaboration with the host laboratory (download Scientific Report template).

Selection procedure

The Education Committee will evaluate the applications based on the following main criteria:

1. The choice of host laboratory, which the applicant must clearly justify.

2. The profile of the applicant, her/his previous work and scientific achievements taking into account her/his carrier stage;

3. The relevance, quality, and clarity of the proposed STM project;

4. The feasibility of the planned activities with respect to the duration of STM;
